Rollover: What is it:

The Rollover, in the financial futures contract market, refers to the operation whereby an open position on an expiring contract is transferred to a contract with a more distant expiration date. This is done to maintain the position without incurring liquidation of the original contract. There are two main types of rollovers:

Technical rollover:

This occurs at the actual expiration of the futures contract. The technical expiration is the one formally defined by market rules, which is the last day to trade the contract. In this situation, the position transfer occurs right near the expiration of the contract.

Volume rollover:

This occurs before the technical expiration of the contract. In this situation, the liquidity shift occurs when trading volumes on the next futures contract exceed the volumes on the expiring contract. It does not have a fixed date, but is related to market behavior, often driven by traders moving their positions ahead of technical expiration to avoid reduced liquidity or higher costs.

Procedure to Perform Rollover:

  • Close Work Plans.
  • Turn off connections to the data streams by removing the green rectangles in the upper right corner.
  • Go to Options - Symbol Rollover.
  • Rollover only if the market is highlighted yellow.
  • Rollover on all markets, including minor markets (MINI and MICRO).
    • If MICRO rollover is not notified, open a Heatmap (VolBook)

Now the contract expiration has been changed correctly.

Restoring Previous Expiration:

  • Close Work Plans.
  • Turn off connections to the data feeds by removing the green rectangles in the upper right corner.
  • Access Options > Symbol Management.
  • Click on the "E" in the upper right corner to enter "Expert Mode."
  • Go to the "Symbol List" column (middle column) and look for the markets with the wrong expiration (MAJOR, MINI, MICRO).
  • Select the instrument with the wrong expiration and click "Edit".
  • In the "Advanced" section (last item), edit the expiration month by entering the previous expiration.
  • Close the "Symbol Management" window.
  • Restart VolSys, without connecting any data streams.

Now the contract expiration has been changed correctly.
